033. Esowista and Ucluelet Arm Wolf Ritual Rights are Handed Over to Tom's Father

Wolf ritual rights given to Tom Sayachapis' father. Tom has never had tuupatis handed over to him in potlatch. All his Esowista rights were thus handed over to his father by canoe-load of Ucluelets who came for that purpose. Texts 33 to 39 inclusive constitute a sort of autobiography of Tom's ceremonial activities. The Ucluelet Arm and Esowista are septs of the Ucluelet tribe.

Seniority is reckoned by lineage and not by age. The newly born child belonged to a senior branch of the family. The Hitatsoath chiefs were uncles to Yai-woman. Taking the wolves to the boy is a way of speaking of handing over a topati involving wolves —in this case, the ceremonial right of having the wolves come in through openings made by removing wall and roof boards.
