Then, when clams were exposed, the California whales would eat them. Such places were good ones for catching California whales, because, when their heads were down in sand, they couldn't see canoe coming; often there would be whole school of them at such place (tušuwis 'place of shaking (tail) on the beach'). Right to spear whale at such place was tupaati, generally of head chief, though it might pass to son-in-law without other tupaatis as dowry.
